Mission of the Masters of Education in Higher Education Administration

The M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration is centered on a theory-to-practice approach, our program provides students the opportunity to examine critical issues, explore current trends and develop foundational knowledge to lead within the field of higher education. The program is designed for those who aim to work on smaller college campus, especially at a faith-based campus—with special attention given to the connection between student development and faith development.

Admission Requirements

For unconditional acceptance into the LaGrange M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration program, an applicant must:

  • Complete an application
  • Have graduated previously with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Submit a resume outlining the organizations and activities from your undergraduate experience
  • Provide a minimum score on the TOEFL exam of at least 550 if English is not the applicant’s primary language
  • Have approval from the program’s department chair

Graduation Requirements

This program consists of 36 hours. Students must complete all required coursework and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Overview of the history, purposes, functions, and organizations of American higher education. This course provides context for how the current system of higher education has grown and evolved over time.

This course will introduce students to the various theoretical frameworks for the understanding of human development theories most affecting college students. The integration of theories with faith development will be emphasized.

This course focuses on the funding sources, fiscal and enrollment management, tuition discounting and budget modeling in private higher education institutions. Students will examine revenue sources, the impact of enrollment, retention and athletics, and various federal and state funding models directed to private higher education institutions.

This course examines various aspects of contemporary college student life and the characteristics of the current and future generations of college students. Students will identify and examine important issues facing college undergraduates including, but not limited to, faith development, sources of motivation, social media, learning styles, development of values, relationship development, mental health/psychosocial development and issues related to gender, health, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

An examination of major legal issues affecting higher education. Topics covered may include student conduct, housing, dress, organizations, Greek life, hazing, activities fees, tuition and related federal laws and regulations.

This course focuses on developing a personal leadership style, recognizing one’s own strengths and talents, and learning to work in collaboration and manage others to maximize talents. This course also includes an examination of leadership theories, frameworks, and the moral and ethical dimensions of the work of educational leaders.

Each student enrolled in the MEdHE receives a placement in an office at LaGrange College or at another faith-based institution to gain practical experience. Offices and institutions will create job opportunities that will contribute to the learning and growth of the student as a higher education professional. May be taken two (2) times.

The internship experience will provide students the opportunity to integrate the theoretical and research coursework within the college workplace environment. Each student will be assigned to an office on the LaGrange College campus and will have a major capstone project to complete as part of the course.
